Less common trends are site-specific information pages about the historic significance of the site, types of trees, birds in the area or other such information. Higher-value items are occasionally included in geocaches as a reward for the First to Find (called 'FTF'), or in locations which are harder to reach. Swiper or use the left and right arrow keys to navigate. Tap or press the Enter Key to follow the link of the current slide if one is provided. Geocaching is a great way to combine the outdoors and the techno-age - experience high-tech scavenger hunting and travel through Oakland County to see what's hidden beyond your backyard!
One of the Park District’s goals is to provide opportunities for a variety of recreational activities, such as wildlife watching, biking, hiking, picnicking and others, which do not negatively affect conserved resources. A popular activity is geocaching, which the Park District will permit with prior written permission.
Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. There are several caches already located in Portage Parks, and they can be found at GeoCaching.com.
Read the Park District’s geocaching policy and download the application form for new caches here.
